I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of seven siblings. I first learned about government service from my father, who was a police officer. I earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of the Pacific and received a Masters in Public Affairs (a public administration and policy degree) from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
I’ve spent most of my professional career working in government finance and budgeting in the Washington DC area, where I’ve worked as an economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an analyst for the U.S. Department of Treasury, and a senior financial and policy analyst with the White House Office of Management and Budget (over 22 years). I’ve also developed specialty policy expertise in several areas including federal disaster assistance, criminal justice and drug programs, and violence against women.
In 2015, not long after my wife and son and I moved to Belmont, I joined the Brennan Center for Justice as a Senior Fellow responsible for a major research project on the financing of state and local court systems.
I retired in 2020, using my free time to ramp up my service to our amazing community as a member of the School Committee, where I continued until April 2023.
To be Moderator, it really helps to be deeply experienced in Belmont's town government. Since moving to Belmont, I’ve been extensively involved in our local town government and other organizations serving the community:
I know our community well and have deep expertise in our town government and how it operates. I'm prepared to assume the role of Moderator and begin work for the benefit of Belmont, Town Meeting, and our Moderator appointed committees from day one.
