I was born and raised in San Leandro, California, one of seven siblings. I first learned about government service from my father, who was a police officer. I earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of the Pacific and received a Masters in Public Affairs (a public policy degree) from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
I’ve spent most of my professional career working in government finance and budgeting in the Washington DC area, where I’ve worked as an economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics (five years), an analyst for the U.S. Department of Treasury (three years), and a senior financial and policy analyst with the White House Office of Management and Budget (22 years). I’ve also focused on policy areas including federal disaster response and criminal justice.
In 2015, not long after my wife and son and I moved to Belmont,I also joined the Brennan Center for Justice in New York as a Senior Fellow responsible for a major research project on state courts.
I retired in 2000, using my free time to ramp up my service to our amazing town as a member of the School Committee, where I served during the Covid pandemic and continued until April 2023.
Since moving to Belmont, I’ve been extensively involved in our local town government:
Town Meeting Member, eight years since 2016
Warrant Committee Member, six years since 2016
Committee to Study the Number of Selectmen, 2017
School Committee Member, four years since 2019
Long Term Capital Planning Committee, 2022
I've also volunteered for the Belmont Media Center for several years, helping to bring news and informational programming to Belmont's residents.
