I have nothing but the deepest appreciation for those who supported the campaign — OUR campaign. We reached thousands of Belmont voters, educated residents about the critical role of the Town Moderator and Town Meeting, and got people thinking about changes that would benefit everyone In Belmont. It’s a real accomplishment, and special thanks to Julie Crockett, Mark Kagan, Paul Roberts, and Dan Barry for all of your invaluable advice and support.
Belmont isn't just a place on a map—it's our home, our community, and our future. Since moving to Belmont in 2015, I've taken an active part in our local government. For the last eight years, I have served as a Town Meeting Member from Precinct 8. In addition, I served for six years on the Warrant Committee (Belmont’s finance committee) and for four years on Belmont’s School Committee, where I was a consistent champion for excellent public education for Belmont’s children. I will leverage all those experiences as your new Town Moderator. Together, we can modernize and improve Belmont's Town Meeting, the cornerstone of our local democracy, and see Belmont benefit from the diversity and expertise of all our Town Meeting members. Together, we will make Belmont work better!
Belmont's Town Meeting is steeped in century-old traditions and it is vital to our local democratic process. But let's face it: Town Meeting needs to modernize. To ensure that our Town Meeting represents Belmont as it is today, in 2024, we need to break down the barriers—whether physical or logistical—to residents who want to participate: from providing childcare for Town Meeting Members with young children, to formalizing and streamlining remote participation procedures in ways that facilitate healthy discussion and debate. It’s time to bring Town Meeting into the 21st century and make it more inclusive and efficient. As your Moderator, I will make that a top priority!
Transparency isn't just rhetoric—it's fundamental to effective governance. As your Town Moderator, I'm committed to appointments that reflect the diversity of the Belmont community. I am also committed to bringing transparency to Town Moderator appointments. That's why I'm proposing a new process: a new Moderator's advisory committee to vet Moderator appointments to the Warrant Committee, Comprehensive Capital Budget Committee, and Belmont’s building committees. This new committee will operate under the State’s Open Meeting Law. That way, we’ll not only ensure transparency, but also foster the inclusivity that makes our town government truly representative of our Town’s population. I hope you’ll join me in shaping a future where diversity and transparency in Belmont government are paramount!
